What Is It About Diamonds?
The De Beers Company introduced its slogan “Diamonds are Forever” in 1947 and today it is iconic. Just about everyone has heard this phrase and associates the extremely durable diamond with the enduring institution of marriage.
Then, in 1953, Marilyn Monroe sang, “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend”; and, it seems, the ladies believed her. Even today, the diamond ring remains the most popular stone when declaring one’s marriage intent.
True, many things have changed since the 1940s and ‘50s. For instance, styles and cuts have evolved. While the round solitaire still is the most popular, there are other options such as the princess, marquise, pear, and oval cut (just to name a few). In fact, according to the American Gem Society, the precision of the cut is the most important factor in highlighting the stone’s natural beauty. What’s even more exciting, colored diamonds are increasing in popularity. They range in colors such as yellow, chocolate, pink, black, and red (which is the rarest).
The diamond is one of the most popular stones used in all types of jewelry, not just engagement rings. What is it about the diamond that makes it such a beloved stone? Quite honestly, I don’t know. What I do know, though, is that there is nothing more exciting than seeing that sparkling stone on my hand, ears, neck, or wrist. I guess Marilyn Monroe was correct. “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.”
