Ways to Create Culturally Authentic Celebrations
More and more we are hearing and reading about cultural inclusivity. We are becoming more sensitive to diverse cultures instead of trying to meld into a homogenous society where everything looks and feels the same. Several things have contributed to this shifting societal awareness including the changing demographics of wedding couples. In June 2021, the Pew Research Center reported that about 19% of new US marriages were couples with differing races or ethnicities. This is up from 11% in 2000.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that weddings have become opportunities to highlight the bride and groom’s ethnic backgrounds and celebrate the fusion of multiple cultures. This is what makes the weddings of today truly unique. It’s no longer about just serving a culture-specific signature drink. Now, there is a desire to curate culturally authentic experiences that honor the generations that came before.
So, what are some ways to create a wedding, or any other event, that is true to your ethnic and cultural background? Here are some tips:
Research. It never hurts to do a little research to find out the origin and reasons for one’s cultural norms. Often, we do things simply because it’s been passed down from one generation to the next. However, once the historical significance is understood, it becomes much more meaningful and better integrated into an event.
Food. Without a doubt, a great event must have outstanding food and your best bet is to hire a caterer that specializes in the type of food you wish to serve.
Music and Dance. We all know that music and dance are universal languages, but every culture and ethnic group has its own sound, favorite songs, and dance moves. The dance floor is one of the most enjoyable ways of featuring one’s culture in its purest form.
Clothing. Traditional attire is a great way of displaying and celebrating one’s culture.
Venue. Seek culture-friendly venues for your celebration. For instance, some cultures have weddings that span multiple days. In this instance, consider looking for a venue where you can have a multi-day event. Also check to see if the venue has the layout and space to accommodate all of the ceremonial aspects.
Event Planner. Engage a planner with experience creating fusion or culture-specific events.
