Speaking of the Holidays…

It’s hard to believe that it’s September and we are talking about the holidays, but we really are. Actually, if we wait much longer, we will officially be late.

This year, more than ever, people will be seeking to have holiday experiences that are full of nostalgia. This will be a time to focus on relationships that are most important to us versus extravagant gifts.

Last year, as we all know, was quite difficult and families could not be together. This year, as more people are vaccinated, some long-held traditions of family and friends gathering to celebrate the season will likely take center stage.

So, what are some things to keep in mind as we begin to think about holiday parties?

First, safety is paramount.

  • The Center of Disease Control regularly updates its guidelines and sometimes it’s a little difficult to keep up. Also, the onset of variants in addition to flu season makes it very hard to predict what the best practices will be in November and December. However, there are some fail-safe assumptions that we can anticipate will still be common practice. For instance, the 3 Ws will still be in play -- wear a mask, wash your hands, and watch your distance. And, of course, if a guest is not feeling well, they will need to stay home. Moreover, if you are not feeling well, the event will need to be cancelled.

Second, carefully consider your guest list.

  • It’s common practice to have a well-thought-out guest list, but this year we will need to think about more than just personality types that will make a good mix of people. We will need to consider if invitees will be comfortable in a group environment. Will some guests only attend if everyone is vaccinated? Will guests be more comfortable if masks are worn? Will the event need to be outside to raise the guests’ comfort levels? Will an air filter need to be running and hand sanitizer stations available?

Third, determine what will be really meaningful.

  • Once the guest list has been narrowed down, it’s time to get creative. What will the guests most enjoy? As already stated, this it will likely be a tradition-heavy season this year. However, this can also be an opportunity to incorporate some new activities started last year. And, most likely, people won’t be looking for anything flashy. Good food paired with great music and beloved company is really what people treasure most.

But, don’t wait until the last minute to put your plans in place. People will have more options this year and you want to be at the top of the social calendar. So, get your invitations out at least four weeks in advance and hire your event planner in September to ensure that all goes smoothly. And most of all, enjoy your holidays!!!
