Trunk Party Tips

August is here, which means it’s almost time to go back to school. It’s hard to believe that summer is winding down; but, didn’t it just start a few days ago? (Sigh!)

Students typically begin the school year with emotions ranging from excitement to total trepidation. For the new college student that is leaving home, it is also a little overwhelming with packing, shopping, and good-bye gatherings. With all of this activity, there’s no better time to kick back and relax for a few minutes with a trunk party.

“What’s a trunk party,” you ask? A trunk party is a fun way to hold an end-of-summer send-off while helping the student assemble many of the items needed for school. Here are some ideas that can be incorporated:

  • Establish a registry that includes a wide range of things such as bed linens, school-logo items, and laundry detergent

  • Have an actual trunk where the gifts can be placed

  • Include the student’s school colors and mascot in the party décor

  • Show a video of the honoree which includes school photos from kindergarten to high school

  • Ask the party attendees to add words of wisdom to a memory book that the student can reference while at school

  • Invite school alums to the party

It’s not necessary to do anything extravagant. Remember, this is intended to be a time for the college-bound student to destress before leaving for school. As long as there is good food and great music, everyone will have a great time.
