Fresh or Silk Flowers: Which Is Better?

It is believed that flowers have been an intrinsic part of weddings from as early as 800 B.C. They were used for various reasons including mythological rituals and warding off unpleasant odors. The more modern use of florals in our hair, as bouquets, and as part of the ceremony and reception décor was popularized in the mid-19th century.

In today’s world, couples painstakingly select their florals; and, more importantly, ponder the big question, “Fresh or silk?” However, before deciding, there are some key factors that should be considered, according to Raleigh, NC’s premier floral designer, Tavares Morgan.

The biggest myth is that silk is an inexpensive alternative to fresh flowers. Tavares explained that to achieve a natural look, high-quality silk stems are a must and will typically cost almost as much as fresh. However, unlike fresh, silk arrangements are reusable and not seasonal. In addition, fresh flowers are living organisms that are sensitive to the elements. For example, in direct sun, orchids burn, and tulips will open and might not last through an entire event.

On the other hand, there’s nothing better than the scent of live flowers. In addition, fresh florals provide a high-end ambiance that can’t be replicated.

Whichever is chosen, a skilled florist who is adept in working with the type selected must be chosen. It’s also acceptable to have arrangements that include both artificial and live flowers.

Quite truthfully, there really is no right or wrong answer. It’s all about personal preference.
