Wedding Cakes – What’s Trending in 2022?

Weddings have many components of which one of the most important is the cake. Hard to believe, but the wedding cake is one of the top things that people notice.

As with all things, the wedding cake has evolved into what we know it to be and according to theknot.com, some interesting fun facts include:

  • Prior to the early 19th century, it was the bridal pie that was the dessert of choice.

  • The first wedding cakes were actually loaves of bread that were broken over the bride’s head to symbolize the couple’s fertility and good fortune.

  • Cake toppers were popularized in the 1950s.

www.magicvenues.com also reports that it was England’s Queen Victoria who, when marrying Prince Albert in 1840, was the first to have a wedding cake with white frosting made of sugar which was quite costly at the time. Consequently, it became known as royal icing and a symbol of purity and wealth. However, as time progressed, elaborately designed, multitiered cakes with colored frosting began to symbolize social status and influence according to www.galafacility.com.

Now as we begin 2022, what do we think will be popular cake trends? Below is some of the buzz.

Size:

Some believe that gatherings will continue to be intimate; and, as result, we will continue to see small, one- or two-tier cakes. However, there will also be the other extreme for those who are ready to put the pandemic behind them by having huge celebrations with large, towering (think seven- to nine-tier) cakes.

More than one: As with social distancing, so goes the wedding cake. Multiple separate cakes with differing flavors and designs are expected to be popular. Some have even suggested that serving a mini-cake per guest will also be a trend.

Flowers: We talked about the rising cost of flowers in August 2021, and with this increase we will probably see more confection and pressed flowers adorning wedding cakes.

Flavors: Chocolate and vanilla are standard flavors that never seems to go out of style. And, while a spice cake is also a popular alternative, red velvet remains one of the top choices.

Displays: Cake displays will be enjoying a new era of creativity. Gone are the simple gold cake stands. Enter cake swings, hoops, arbors, and arches decorated with feathers, pampas grass, florals, and more.

Regardless of the trends, wedding cakes remain a personal preference that depicts the couple’s personality. Whether it is simple, small, extravagant, bold, colorful or non-existent, it is totally up to the couple. But remember, it is always advisable to ask your planner for suggested bakers who can turn your vision into that perfect sweet treat.
