Last month we introduced the 5-step DDD Framework -- our proven methodology for successfully curating events. During the next few months, we will be taking an in-depth look at each step. So let’s begin at the beginning which is Step 1: Develop the Event Design and Theme.

This first step is pivotal to creating a truly authentic event.  It is the jump-off point from which everything else will follow; and, yet, it’s also the glue that holds everything together. Subsequent decisions must align with this themed design to evoke a cohesive event experience.

Now that I’ve totally scared you, rest assured that this does not have to be painstaking if you ask and answer some basic initial questions.  Specifically, before deciding anything, determine the following:

  • What’s the event purpose?

  • What must occur to make the event perfect?

  • Who will be attending?

These questions should always be the first point of consideration since the ultimate objective is for the event attendees to have a great time. Let’s face it, bored guests are an event kiss of death.

After gaining an idea of your guest list, think about things that haven’t been done before.  If you want your event to stand out, this is where it begins.

Once identified, anything supporting the event purpose, activities, and attendees can be the inspiration for the event design and theme. If you feel an emotional connection, put it on your inspiration board for added consideration. This is where the fun starts, for here is where you begin to customize.

Think about things such as:

  • What makes this gathering unique?

  • What will the attendees enjoy?

  • If there will be a guest of honor, what are some of his or her favorite things?

  • What time of year will the event be held?

The list of questions can be endless. However, the idea is to capture what makes the occasion special. As you begin to ponder these questions, the theme and design will start to naturally evolve. Don’t worry about being on trend. Instead, focus on what really feels right because once you capture the true essence of the event, it will be absolutely PERFECT!

Now that you’ve figured out the look and feel, do you know how to make it happen? If the answer is, “No,” then it’s time to contact your favorite NC event planner. She will provide the artistic ideas to cost-effectively bring the theme to life.

Next is Step 2: Vendor Selection which we will discuss next month, so stay tuned.
